ARRIVAL:
A contestant’s bag will be given to all competitors upon registration, which
will include a map showing where all the fields are, and a program listing
‘what’s on and where’. When you arrive at the Registration Centre on Saturday
29th , you will need to bring the following items with you…
- some money to buy your new year’s
eve barbecue ticket, t-shirts, hats, badges etc.,
- your valid FAI card (or your club’s receipt for membership and insurance),
- your heavy model permits where
required,
- and all the transmitters you intend to use.
RADIO CERTIFICATION:
Although your Tx’s must already
have certification, an additional verification will be performed at the Registration
Centre (shouldn’t take more than a few seconds). If all is OK, a distinctive
sticker will be applied to your transmitter/s. Your event CD will be looking
for this sticker when you arrive for your event… no sticker, no turning on!
If you intend to arrive after the registration day, please be advised that
it’s your responsibility to pre-arrange for frequency verification and the
sticker. Talk to Peter Harris.
- Only 2-inch
frequency keys shall be permitted for use at the Nats,
with no exceptions.
Please be sure that you have one, and clearly marked with your name and frequency
number.
WEATHER:
It’s Summer, so expect it to be quite warm. And as with any outdoor event,
it’s wise to bring whatever you need for protection and comfort, including
sunglasses, hat, shade tent, sun block, water, folding chair, aeroguard, etc.
NEW
YEAR’S EVE BARBECUE:
Will be held at the aus.e.wildlife Sanctuary. This is
about 8k north of Albury, just before the Ettamogah Pub. This is a wonderful
venue where children will be kept entertained for hours, and a great relaxation
for adults. There is seating around the sanctuary, but it would be a good
idea to bring a folding chair or a rug to sit on. The barby’s good value,
you won’t go home hungry!
CATERING: All fields
except for the Ibis practice field will have catering from about 10 am onwards.
FIELDS: Maps will
be provided in your ‘contestant’s bag’ at Registration.
- Pylon Racing (including electric) and the
Scale events will be run at the new Twin Cities field, which is
about 12k north of Albury. (Same location as previous field) The runways
are conveyor matting. The main runway is about 160 metres long, and the cross-runway
is about 120 metres long. Both are about 9 metres wide. DIRECTIONS: The
turn-off is on the left if you are traveling north on the Hume Highway (a
few k’s before the Ettamogah pub, which would be on the right).
- Old-Timer events will be run at
the Wodonga Turf Club. This is about 12 km south of Albury. Travelling from
Albury towards Wodonga, go past the turnoff to the Hume Freeway. In Wononga
turn half left into Thomas Mitchell Rd at the first roundabout.
- Glider events will be run at the
Gehrig Estate winery, which is on the Murray Valley Highway, about 25k west
of Wodonga.
DIRECTIONS:
If coming from Melbourne up the Hume freeway, go past the Barnawartha turn-off,
and take the next turn-off onto the Murray Valley Highway. If coming from
the Sydney side, get onto the Hume Freeway just north of Wodonga, and go about
15 k. Exit on the left, to the overpass to the Murray Valley Highway (sign
says to Yarrawonga).
- Helicopter and Pattern events will
be run at the Wodonga club field.
DIRECTIONS:
same as for Glider, except when you have turned onto the MV H’way, look
for the turn-off road on your right, about one or two k’s from the Hume F’way
exit.
- Practice Field. The
Ibis field (about 37 k west of Albury) will now be a practice field only
for any of the R/C classes.
DEMONSTRATION
EVENTS:
Turbine aircraft and R/C Scale Combat. Because there is a growing interest
in these types of models, and we are trying to fit in some demonstrations
during these Nats. The Gas turbines will fly at the Twin Cities field after
each day of Scale, time permitting. The R/C Scale Combat events will be staged
after each day of Pattern and Helicopter at the Wodonga Club field, time permitting.
C.D’s please be aware that there should be an hour or
so available each day for these events.
“CONTROL-FUEL”:
Pylon
Racing F3D class will be supplied with sufficient “control-fuel” as per
the rules, which will be FAI castor-oil fuel, the same as was supplied and
used at the recent World Pylon Racing Champs held in Queensland.
Old-Timer
Texaco and 2CC Duration events will be supplied with a “control-fuel”
as per the rules. There will be alternatives available: castor-oil fuel, or
synthetic-oil fuel… your choice. Texaco fuel will contain 5% nitromethane and
15% oil. 2CC Duration will be FAI fuel, 20% oil and the balance methanol.
PYLON RACING:
All Pylon Racing Competitors shall
Note:
- A pylon briefing will be held after the official
opening.
- The approved Australian course layout will
apply –in accordance with the diagram below – for the F3d and F400 Events:
- The QM and Half A events will follow the same
principal – but will be to the original course size of 145 meter main legs
with the30 meter base leg.
- We will be using 4:1 fuel.
(You are not permitted to use your own fuel). Fuel will be supplied – all
refueling will be from the same drum.
- The First 6 place getters will have their
models processed immediately after the event.
- Any model that is considered structurally
unsound will not be allowed to compete.
- We have a target of 7 rounds in each event.
To achieve this we may have to start racing at 8 am. This will depend on the
number of entries that we receive. This cannot be finalized until all entries
are received.
- Pylon Racing is very labor intensive – you
will be required to help is there are insufficient helpers.
- F3D and F400 will be run together – but as separate events – those wishing
to compete in both events may have difficulty in preparing their aircraft
between rounds. It is advisable that you enter only one of those events.
Inability to be at the start line on time will mean disqualification for that
round
- At this stage we intend to Run Half A on day
1 to the Finish – then start Qm. Day 2 we will finish Qm and then start F400
and F3D – finishing off on Day 3.
- You better have all your models well trimmed
out. Any constant erratic flying will not be tolerated.
If a person wants his model processed on registration
day he can apply to Eddie Rich 59982449 (H) and make arrangements with him

Clarification
of certain Free Flight Rules for “55th Nats”
F1B (Wakefield)
- Maximum
weight of motor(s) lubricated 35 g
Refer: Administrative
Rules for Australian & National Championships General Rules 2.6
The FAI rules which are in force at the beginning of
a National Championships remain in force until the conclusion of those Championships.
Hand Launch Glider
- Rule
3.3.7 should read: Scoring.
The sum of the times for the best three flights gives the contestant’s
score. In the event of two or more Contestants achieving the
same time for three flights, then the aggregate of the remaining three flights
will determine the winner. In the further event of two or more contestants
achieving equal times over six flights, but not 6 maximum flights of 60 seconds
there will be a fly-off with no time limit.
- Indoor
Hand Launch Glider
This event will be run to the International Rules F1N. This limits the number
of models to 3 and increased the number of rounds flown to 9.
P-30 Rubber
- Rule
3.8.8 Should read: Classification. The total time of the five flights
of each competitor is taken for the final classification. (Rule 3.8.6 refers
to a maximum flight time of 90 seconds). If a tie exists after five
flights have been recorded, then each successive flight shall have the maximum
duration of 30 seconds more than the previous flight.
Hangar
Rat
- Rule
3.Z.6 Should read: Timing of Flights. The timing of each flight shall commence
when the model is released. Timing will terminate when
a)
The model touches the floor.
b) The
model comes in contact with any person, any part of the building or its contents
other than the floor and translational movement ceases.
Note: In this case, the timekeepers shall continue to time the flight for ten
seconds after translational movement has ceased. Should the model remain in
contact with the building or its contents after 10 seconds, timing will cease
and the 10 seconds will be subtracted from the flight time. Should the aircraft
release itself from contact with the building in less than 10 seconds, timing
will continue normally.
Free
Flight Field. (situated on McMahon’s property at Springhurst)
- Kevin
McMahon has agreed to move all livestock to another property. Gates on the
McMahon property can be left open during the course of the events. This will
enable easier and quicker retrieval of models. Of course gates on adjoining
properties must be reclosed.
- The site is in good shape and the grass is being kept
in control by over 2000 sheep. Kevin told me that his harvester does not leave
a sharp cut on the wheat stalk and tends to push the stalk over. All the crops
should be harvested before the New Year.
- The
Springhurst CFA will provide catering on the free flight site.
- Springhurst
Tour-Tel bookings are filling at a steady rate. The charge of $27.50 per night
includes a cooked breakfast of bacon & eggs and sausages. Tom has agreed
